[Video] From Port to Hydrogen Valley: Hydrogen Developments in North Holland North

7 January 2026

At first glance, the Port of Den Helder may still seem quiet today. Behind the scenes, however, intensive work is underway on the future of the hydrogen value chain. Den Helder is steadily developing into a key hub in the sustainable energy transition of North Holland North – and beyond.

Hydrogen Programme of the Regio Deal Maritime Cluster

Commissioned by the Regio Deal Maritime Cluster Kop van Noord-Holland, Development Agency North-Holland North, in close collaboration with New Energy Coalition, implemented the regional hydrogen programme. The programme aimed to strengthen cooperation, accelerate projects and create the right conditions for a future-proof hydrogen economy in the region.

A major milestone resulting from this programme is the official recognition of Hydrogen Valley North Holland. This status highlights the region’s unique strengths: a powerful combination of port activities, offshore energy, industry, knowledge institutions and public authorities working together to build an integrated hydrogen value chain.

Visible Results in the Port of Den Helder

A new video marks the conclusion of the hydrogen programme within the Regio Deal. In the video, Danah Kolstee from New Energy Coalition guides viewers through several tangible results achieved in and around the Port of Den Helder.

One of these developments is shore power. By supplying vessels with electricity directly from the quay, the port becomes cleaner and quieter: reduced noise, zero local emissions and a significant step towards sustainable maritime operations.

Another key initiative is Zephyros, which connects offshore wind energy with hydrogen production. Wind power from Statkraft is used for electrolysis, after which the produced hydrogen is supplied to industry and shipping. Den Helder plays a crucial role as the connection point between sea and land.

International cooperation also plays an important role. Through North Sea Hydrogen Valley Ports, the Port of Den Helder collaborates with other European ports on the deployment of hydrogen applications in the maritime sector. This cooperation accelerates innovation and strengthens the position of North Holland North within the European hydrogen landscape.

Ready for the Next Phase

With the completion of the hydrogen programme within the Regio Deal, the work is far from finished — quite the opposite. Plans are in place, partnerships are firmly established and new initiatives are emerging. North Holland North is ready for the next step towards a robust, sustainable and economically strong hydrogen economy.

Together with regional partners Programmabureau Noordzeekanaalgebied and Developmen Agency North-Holland North, H2Hub-NH will continue to support these developments and further strengthen Hydrogen Valley North Holland.
